Ministry to Deaf Culture

Mrs. Good

Mrs. Good

Bethel's Ministry for Deaf Culture has thrived for several years. It was the continuation of a direction of a ministry begun by Reverend Silvester S. Beaman in Bermuda. It began at Bethel AME Church in Delaware as obedience to God's call. Rev. Beaman expressed his thoughts, the former lead coordinator, Martia Good, prayed and the ministry began. In worship we visually interpret THE WORD and beautifully interpret spiritual music. We offer our skill in all aspects of church activity and ministries (youth classes, dance ministry, youth choirs, senior choir Cantata, etc.).

The Deaf ministry has been productive. Weekly American Sign Language classes are taught to Bethel members and to members of the community. Classes are held on Saturday mornings, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in the Bethel church multi purpose room. In outreach we interact with the Delaware Black Deaf Association, three community churches and a Bermuda AME church; all share our language and culture focus. We volunteer in community service as interpreters making audible speech available to Deaf Culture in visual language. For the last two years, the Bethel Ministry for Deaf Culture has provided sign language interpretation for the annual DuPont Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Our weekly class teaches scripture, church doctrine, and gospel music. Class now includes a Deaf member and three hearing children of a deaf parent. We are actively in the development of a new Deaf ministry at Ezion Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. Last year, we started a sign language choir, Hands of Glory, composed up of 5 Bethel members. The sign language ministry now has approximately 20 members from Bethel and our surrounding community from ages 5 to 65. We have been blessed to experience seven years of growth and service.

Phillipians 2:9-11 The Name above all names (Jesus)....every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord to the Glory of God the Father. All men must be drawn to Him. The deaf will receive the Gospel if we overcome the barrier of deafness and welcome them into the Body of Christ. We lift our hands in total praise.

Please come out and join our ministry or come to learn sign language on Saturday mornings, 10:00 AM in the Bethel Church multipurpose room.
